An oil tanker near the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco, California, February 2014.
In what’s now a standard feature of the Anas campaign that isn’t quite true. Just as “I don’t take a dividend” from the family firm turned out to mean ‘I don’t take a dividend – any more’. Just as “giving up shares” means – giving them to his children. Just as - after several weeks of claiming to have no role in the family firm, putting his shares in a trust fund is apparently done in order to “focus full time on the Labour Party, concentrate full time on getting a Labour government”. (So what is being given up to allow more concentration? and having been a an MP for 5 years, some of them as Deputy Leader and an MSP for two, why is this concentration on matters Labour only happening now?). Just as the bulk of the policies that are claimed as being “Announced by Anas” are in fact copied out of the 2016 or 2017 manifestos. Just as, in this instance the claim that the proposal is being “funded through Labour’s plan for fairer income tax” only lasts until the footnotes of the press release. These show that 86% of the funding comes not from “fairer income tax2 but by abandoning Labour’s planned £5 increase in child benefit for everyone. So not really, not even mostly, from “fairer income tax” at all.
